Common Myths About Mulching, Debunked

May 27, 2022
Mulching is a great way to insulate the roots when the temperatures are low. It can also help to preserve moisture. There are different kinds of mulch, including synthetic ones. According to Off Grid Grandpa, a synthetic mulch can last for decades. However, you need to replace it after 5 to 10 years. Unfortunately, there are lots of myths about mulching. Here are some of the most common myths.

Mulch is Created Equal

This is one of the common myths about mulching. The type of mulch you use matters. For instance, natural, organic bark mulch that has compost mixed in will not only preserve moisture but will also supply some nutrients to the plants. On the other hand, mulch from old pallets has zero nutritional value since it's just dead material. This type of mulch may look good, especially because some of it is dyed, but it can lead to a situation where you need to replace plants from time to time.

Mulch Attracts Termites

People think that because mulching creates a damp environment, it also attracts termites to your home, which is not the case. While insects tend to frequent dark, damp spaces, there are things you can do to ensure that your mulch doesn't end up being termite bait. For instance, you can keep your mulch bed at least six inches from the base of your foundation. This will leave a strip of dry dirt between the mulch and the foundation. That way, termites won't follow the mulch into your foundation.

Mulch Should Be Deep

This is another common myth. Unfortunately, a lot of homeowners end up damaging their foliage without knowing it. It's crucial to keep your mulch at a depth of 3 inches deep for optimal protection and saturation. If you make it deeper than that, you will end up with too much moisture, and this can make your plants and tree susceptible to rot damage. It's important to stick to these depth measurements, so you don't end up creating more problems than you are solving.

These are some of the common myths surrounding mulching. It's crucial to first do your research before applying mulch to your plants and trees. That way, you don't end up following the wrong advice leading to more problems. If you are looking for mulch for your yard, get in touch with us today. We look forward to assisting you!
